It reads
everything

Screenshelf reads every screenshot with on-device OCR — the text inside the image, plus the filename. No account, no setup.

2

Search by
any word

Search by any word that appears on screen — a price, an error message, a name. The text you remember, not the filename.

3

Find it in
seconds

Find and open the exact capture in seconds. Quick Look, copy the text, or reveal it in Finder. Done.

// Questions
How does the search actually work?

When you add a screenshot, Screenshelf runs on-device OCR (Apple's Vision framework) to read the text inside the image, then indexes it alongside the filename. Search any word that appears on screen and the matching captures come straight up — no cloud, no AI subscription.

Can I add screenshots from the Photos app?

Yes. Drag images straight from the macOS Photos app onto Screenshelf — and the same works from Finder or any other app. Each one is copied into your shelf and indexed locally with on-device OCR, so it's searchable by its text in seconds. And once a capture is in, you can drag it back out into Mail, Finder or a chat without exporting.

Can I preview a screenshot without opening it?

Yes. Select any capture and press Space for a full-size Quick Look preview, exactly like in Finder — a native panel that lets you confirm it's the right one without launching another app. Press Space again to close it.

Can I turn screenshots into Markdown notes / send them to Obsidian?

Yes — it's the heart of v0.1.3. Pick any capture and Screenshelf turns it into a clean Markdown note: metadata, a short description generated on-device, and the full OCR text. Send it straight to your Obsidian vault, ready to link and search alongside the rest of your knowledge.

Does the AI description leave my Mac?

No. The description, the OCR text and the detected links, emails, phone numbers and IBANs are all generated 100% on-device — nothing is uploaded, and the app makes no network calls for your content. Your captures stay on your Mac.

Which languages does the OCR recognise?

It uses Apple's built-in text recognition, which handles English, Spanish and a wide range of other Latin-script languages out of the box. It reads both printed and on-screen UI text inside your captures.

Where is the index stored?

In a private local database on your Mac, locked down with strict file permissions. The index — and the recognised text in it — never leaves your machine.

What about my privacy? My screenshots have sensitive data.

That's exactly why Screenshelf is 100% on-device. Screenshots often contain passwords, bank details and private messages — none of that, and none of the text OCR reads from it, is ever uploaded anywhere. The app makes no network calls for your content at all.

Will it slow down my Mac with a big backlog?

No. The initial pass over your existing screenshots runs in the background at low priority, so you can keep working. On Apple Silicon it reads roughly five captures a second, then stays out of your way. After that it watches your screenshots folder and indexes new captures automatically, in real time, so they're searchable seconds after you take them.

Is it a subscription?

No. One-time purchase of $24.99, yours forever. You get free updates within the same major version. Major upgrades may be paid, and only if you choose to take them.

How many Macs can I use it on?

Every Mac you own, with a single license. Enter the key on each one and you're set.

Can I get a refund?

Absolutely — a 14-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. Payments are handled by Paddle; just reply to your receipt and we'll sort it out.
